Shalom is a word that represents peace and wholeness. It means more that community service, it means community restoration. Working for the peace and wholeness of the community. While this takes many forms, it’s ultimate fulfillment is in Jesus. He is the answer. He brings restoration. He can fix all the broken parts of our world and lives. This is the heart of Shalom.

This however is not just something for one community or one nation…it’s global. This summer Karis sending a team to Brazil to join in the effort to RestoreBrazil. This will be the second time that Karis has sent a team overseas. In 2008 Karis sent a team Kampala, Uganda to work in the villages surrounding the capital.

Shalom is for everyone, everywhere. Shalom comes through the restoring hope of Jesus.

Recently Karis was nominated for a Hero Award. These awards recognize groups and individuals in the community that make a significant impact by serving others. Karis was nominated by a local organization, Boone County Council on Aging. They are a wonderful agency that serves the aging population in Columbia. Karis has worked with them over the last year to do tree removal, yard work, painting, and a variety of other tasks. You can read more about the Hero Awards here: http://www.columbiatribune.com/hero_award/

It is a great honor to be nominated for this award and Karis is excited to get to partner with local agencies like the Boone County Council on Aging. However, all the efforts of our church point to the need for a true hero. Every community and every person needs the man who can rescue them from everything that’s wrong in the world. His name is Jesus. He is the true hero!

To join Karis in serving the community, email Ryan.

Everyday there are children in Columbia who put their name on a list. A list for what? A friend. A mentor. Big Brothers Big Sisters is a great organization that links children in Columbia with caring adults who serve as a mentor in their life. This provides the children with a positive role model and someone to genuinely care about them.

Many children have to wait a long time. Children with parents who are in prison usually wait even longer. There is a special need for mentors for children with parents in prison and Karis has been asked to help. Would you consider being a mentor to a child with a parent in prison? If you’d like to learn more, email Tom. Tom is a Karis representative to Big Brothers Big Sisters and is a mentor as well.

This is a great way to serve kids in our community and share the love of Jesus with them. It is also a way to connect and serve those that are in prison by serving their children.

Seek Shalom. Help a child in need.

“Everything about the tragedy in Haiti points to our need for redemption. This tragedy may lead to a new openness to the Gospel among the Haitian people. That will be to the glory of God. In the meantime, Christ’s people must do everything we can to alleviate the suffering, bind up the wounded, and comfort the grieving. If Christ’s people are called to do this, how can we say that God hates Haiti?”
